A good rule of thumb for determining the desirability of any early sewing machine is its serial #.
Any early sewing machine (pre 1870) by any maker with a serial # of 5,000 or less would be desirable.

The decals are in really good condition as is the wood work, it looks like it has hardly been used. Another example of this superb machine but this time it has a central drawer with recessed knob and the woodwork has a very attractive colour. It was made in large numbers and remained in production for some 20 years with only cosmetic improvements. The decals are almost invisible on the base of the machine but are still evident on the curved arm & shoulder. The Companys Trade Mark is stamped on the shuttle slide plate. This machine would date to around 1883 and has a brass plated needlebar cover. Dates from around 1890 and came complete with shuttle and bobbin insitu and a bobbin still in the winder! Although the decals are worn, the centre decal which reads 'Jones Hand Machine' is largely intact. The base has an inlaid metal badge depicting a Gryphon. The Princess of Wales' and another 'Jones & Company Guide Bridge Nr Manchester' Jones Medium Spool treadle Serial No.14692.
